From the most visited expedition polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic, sub-Arctic Northern Europe, Alaska and the Atlantic Islands, to the temperate waters of Galapagos and the Kimberley. Expedition cruising has a place for all interests and travel desires.

Snorkelling in icy waters

Polar Snorkeling

Snorkelling on expedition ships is an increasingly popular activity. And for some, polar snorkelling is the ultimate experience. This is offered by many ExplorEarth partners in Antarctica, not the Arctic due to the risk of Polar Bear encounters.

Whale watching

To see whales breaching, bubble-net feeding and showcasing their flukes, Antarctica is the best region to visit. Whale activity is particularly prominent in late-season, March-April, with seas described recently by ExplorEarth writer Billy Heaney as, 'Humpback Soup!'.

Kayaking in Svalbard

Kayaking

Kayaking has become on of the most popular activities on expedition cruises, that may be included or optional on specific sailings. Our experts say that East Greenland is likley the best place for kayaking from a ship, with dramatic backdrops like Scoresbysound. This is closely followed by the Antarctic Peninsula.

Polar Bears

Polar Bears are only seen in the Arctic, and primarily from expedition cruises to Svalbard. These typically involve flying to Norway and then taking a second flight to Longyearbyen. There are however restrictions that prevent expedition ships for getting too close to the bears of Svalbard. You can also see bears in East Greenland and The Northwest Passage, but for a guaranteed bear experience, Churchill in the Canadian Arctic is the primary place to visit.

This is peak summer in the Southern Hemisphere. You’ll encounter abundant wildlife like penguins with chicks, active whales, and vast icebergs under nearly 24-hour daylight. Ice conditions also allow deeper exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula and the opportunity to step foot on the mainland Antarctic Continent.

The Kimberley’s dry season begins, with spectacular waterfalls (like King George Falls) still flowing from the wet season. You’ll cruise through red cliffs, ancient rock art sites, and encounter humpback whales starting their migration north.

Water levels begin to drop, revealing jungle trails and more land-based exploration. Wildlife is abundant, bird activity is high, and the temperature is more comfortable. It's a great time for immersive rainforest experiences in Peru or Brazil and Colombia.
