When Darkness Falls Over Greenland: The Expedition Ships Chasing the 2026 Solar Eclipse

On 12 August, the Moon's shadow will sweep across one of the most remote parts of the Arctic. Scattered along the Greenland coast will be expedition ships carrying hundreds of travellers who have sailed thousands of miles for a spectacle lasting barely two minutes. We look at where the ExplorEarth partners are heading, how their expedition teams plan to position their ships and what eclipse day might actually look like in Greenland

At some point during the afternoon of 12 August, normal expedition operations aboard a collection of ships around East Greenland will effectively cast anchor (or dynamic position).

Zodiacs may already have carried passengers ashore. Cameras will be mounted on tripods. Eclipse glasses will appear. Expedition leaders who normally spend their days discussing polar bears, glaciers and sea ice will find themselves talking about the Sun, Moon and celestial mechanics.

And then, if the famously unpredictable Greenland weather cooperates, daylight will begin to disappear.

The total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026 follows an extraordinary path across the Arctic, crossing Greenland before continuing towards Iceland and Spain. In parts of East Greenland, totality will last for approximately two minutes and 17 seconds.

For expedition cruising, it has created something unusual and has been in the planning for years. 

Several of the industry's leading operators planning teams were ahead of the game, and have deliberately positioned ships around Greenland to intercept the Moon's shadow, turning what would ordinarily be Arctic expedition voyages into perhaps the most unusual expedition departures of the season.

Among them are several ExplorEarth Approved Partners, including HX Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, AE Expeditions, Polar Latitudes, Lindblad Expeditions and Swan Hellenic.

The fascinating part is that they will not all experience the eclipse in quite the same way.

Why an expedition ship could be one of the best places to watch It

There is one enormous variable hanging over every eclipse expedition: cloud.

A traveller standing at a fixed viewing site has relatively few options if cloud arrives at precisely the wrong moment.

A ship is different.

Captains and expedition leaders can monitor forecasts, sea ice, visibility and local conditions and potentially alter their position. That does not guarantee clear skies, but it provides something particularly valuable when thousands of pounds and years of anticipation are riding on two minutes of astronomy: mobility.

It is essentially expedition cruising distilled into a single afternoon.

There is a plan. But conditions ultimately decide what happens.

Quark, for example, says its team will continue studying the mountainous terrain, angle of the Sun, local ice conditions and weather patterns right up until eclipse day before determining the best viewing experience. The final plan may therefore only become clear in the hours before totality.

Lindblad similarly says its captain will navigate towards the best position within the path of totality, conditions permitting.

One operator has gone further by publishing both its intended position and its contingency.

Its primary target aboard Plancius is Øfjord in Scoresby Sund at approximately 70.878°N, 27.286°W. If sea ice prevents the ship from reaching Scoresby Sund, Oceanwide plans to head south along the ice edge towards another point within the zone of totality on the Blosseville Coast. That flexibility could prove crucial.

Ship positions should be treated as indicative, not live or exact locations. Where an operator has published coordinates, these have been used. Where only a region such as Scoresby Sund, King Oscar Fjord or the Blosseville Coast has been announced, we have plotted a representative point in that area. Several captains intend to make their final positioning decision on eclipse day according to cloud cover, weather, sea ice and sea conditions, so the actual locations may differ.

Polar Latitudes: Watching from the Greenland shore

One of the most intriguing eclipse plans is aboard Ocean Albatros, now operated by Polar Latitudes.

The ship is expected to be positioned along East Greenland’s extraordinary Blosseville Coast, where the voyage plan identifies a potential landing location close to the centre line of the eclipse.

If conditions allow, the intention is to experience the eclipse from shore rather than simply from the ship. Ocean Albatros can anchor offshore while the expedition team scouts the proposed landing site and assesses wildlife, sea and weather conditions before passengers travel ashore by Zodiac.

The attraction of the location is its open outlook towards the western sky, potentially allowing the eclipse to unfold above one of Greenland’s wildest coastal landscapes without surrounding mountains obstructing the view.

If everything comes together, it could produce one of the defining images of the entire eclipse fleet: passengers standing on an almost completely uninhabited stretch of East Greenland, Ocean Albatros anchored offshore, as the Moon passes across the Sun and the Arctic landscape falls briefly into darkness.

As always in Greenland, however, the final decision will belong to conditions on the day. Weather, sea ice, wind and landing conditions could all influence where and how the eclipse is ultimately experienced.

Quark Expeditions: Two ships and two eclipse experts

Quark Expeditions has committed two ships to eclipse voyages.

Ultramarine is operating a 13-day Iceland-to-Greenland expedition, while Ocean Explorer is undertaking a longer 17-day voyage.

The ships also carry specialist eclipse expertise.

Veteran science journalist and eclipse enthusiast David Baron joins Ultramarine, while eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler is aboard Ocean Explorer.

For passengers, this should make the hours before the eclipse almost as interesting as the event itself. Rather than simply being told when to put their glasses on, guests can learn about the mechanics of the eclipse, the path of totality and exactly what they are about to witness.

Quark calculates approximately two minutes and 17 seconds of totality in its planned viewing region.

Then there is Ultramarine's other unusual advantage.

It carries two helicopters.

While the eclipse itself is planned as a ship-based experience, the voyage also incorporates heli-flightseeing over Greenland, adding another dimension to what is already one of the more unusual Arctic departures of the year.

AE Expeditions: A NASA astronaut in Greenland

There can surely be few more appropriate expedition guests for eclipse week than somebody who has actually viewed Earth from space.

AE Expeditions' Founder, Greg Mortimer, is sailing the 15-day Jewels of the Arctic: Greenland Solar Eclipse voyage, aboard the eponymous Greg Mortimer ship, from Svalbard towards East Greenland and Iceland.

Joining passengers is Dr Sandra Magnus, an engineer and former NASA astronaut who flew aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis and spent months aboard the International Space Station.

It gives AE an intriguing perspective on the event.

The voyage itself remains very much an Arctic expedition, exploring Svalbard before heading towards East Greenland and Scoresbysund. But on 12 August the focus switches temporarily from the landscapes of Earth to what is happening above them.

HX Expeditions: Eclipse day during a ten-day Greenland exploration

HX Expeditions' MS Spitsbergen is approaching the eclipse from another direction, beginning its 17-day expedition in Svalbard before crossing the Greenland Sea.

Passengers are being prepared during the crossing with astronomy lectures explaining what they are about to witness.

The ship then spends around ten days exploring Northeast Greenland National Park and Scoresby Sund, with the eclipse occurring during that expedition period.

As with any Greenland voyage, HX makes clear that weather and ice will determine the precise route.

That makes MS Spitsbergen another interesting ship to follow on the day itself. Its bridge and expedition team will be balancing the planned Greenland itinerary with the overriding objective of placing passengers somewhere capable of experiencing totality.

Lindblad Expeditions: National Geographic photographers beneath the eclipse

Lindblad Expeditions also has ships positioned for the event.

National Geographic Endurance's Iceland's Wild West Coast to East Greenland departure is scheduled to navigate into the path of totality, while National Geographic Explorer has its own Arctic Eclipse Odyssey linking Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

The photographic possibilities are obvious.

A total solar eclipse is spectacular anywhere. Put it above a Greenland landscape of mountains, fjords, sea ice and icebergs and the surroundings become part of the event.

Lindblad's National Geographic photography heritage should make the results particularly interesting to watch once passengers and expedition photographers begin sharing images from the voyage.

The two minutes everyone has travelled for

The eclipse itself will not arrive suddenly.

Over roughly an hour, the Moon will progressively move across the Sun.

The light will begin to change.

Temperatures may fall. Shadows can become strangely sharp. The Greenland landscape may take on an increasingly unfamiliar quality.

But almost everything about an eclipse changes at the moment of totality.

Only when the Sun is completely covered can observers safely remove their eclipse glasses and see the solar corona surrounding the black silhouette of the Moon.

For approximately two minutes, depending upon each ship's precise position, Greenland will effectively experience an extraordinarily brief twilight in the middle of the Arctic afternoon.

Then sunlight returns.

Considering the distances travelled, the ships involved and the planning that has gone into these voyages, two minutes sounds almost absurdly short.

But that is rather the point.

Will Greenland produce one of the great expedition images of 2026?

There will be easier places to watch this eclipse.

Spain offers considerably simpler logistics. Iceland provides excellent accessibility. Both have large areas within the eclipse path.

Greenland offers something else.

Imagine the silhouette of an expedition ship sitting beneath a darkened Arctic sky. Or the corona of the Sun appearing above the mountains of Scoresby Sund. Or a line of people standing on an otherwise deserted beach along the Blosseville Coast as daylight disappears around them.

Those images could become some of the defining photographs of the 2026 Arctic season.

Of course, there is one final participant in every Greenland expedition that refuses to follow anybody's itinerary.

The weather.

Cloud could obscure the Sun. Sea ice could alter a route. Wind could prevent a planned landing. A viewing position carefully calculated months in advance could change during the final hours.

Which is precisely why following the expedition ships on 12 August will be so fascinating.

Across East Greenland, captains, expedition leaders, meteorologists, astronomers, photographers and some very excited passengers will all be trying to solve the same problem:

Where, exactly, should we be when the Moon's shadow arrives?

And at around the same moment, scattered across one of the wildest coastlines on Earth, a small fleet of expedition ships will find out whether they got it right.
