Mike Unwin is a UK-based writer who specialises in travel and the natural world. Among his 40 published books for both adults and children are the Bradt Guide to Southern African Wildlife (Bradt Guides), Around the World in 80 Birds (Laurence King) and Migration (Bloomsbury). He also writes regularly for numerous leading national and international publications, including The TelegraphThe GuardianBBC WildlifeTravel Africa, WanderlustSAGA Magazine and RSPB Nature’s Home

Mike has been exploring the natural world since childhood and is a committed conservationist. He has visited all seven continents in search of their wildlife and has made numerous expedition cruises around the world’s oceans, from the Bering Sea to the Sea of Cortez. He has a particular affinity for southern Africa, where he worked for eight years, gaining extensive field experience.

Awards for Mike’s writing include ‘UK Travel Writer of the Year’ (British Guild of Travel Writers, 2013), ‘Best off-the-beaten-track feature’ (CLIA Cruise Journalism Awards 2016), ‘LATA Travel Writer of the Year’ (Latin American Tourism Association, 2011) and UK Nature Writer of the Year’ (BBC Wildlife, 2000). He is also an accomplished photographer and illustrator, an experienced public speaker and podcaster, and an occasional broadcaster for BBC Radio.
