About the Bearded Seal

The bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus) is a large marine mammal found primarily in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. It is notable for its thick, bristly whiskers, which give the species its name. These highly sensitive whiskers help the seal detect prey on the seafloor.

Adult bearded seals typically range from 2.1 to 2.6 metres (7 to 8.5 feet) in length and can weigh between 200 to 430 kilograms (440 to 950 pounds), with females generally being slightly larger than males.

They have a robust, elongated body covered in greyish to brownish fur, sometimes with lighter or reddish hues. Their whiskers are long and prominent.

Bearded seals feed on benthic organisms, including crustaceans, molluscs, and fish. They use their sensitive whiskers to locate prey buried in the sediment.

They are mostly solitary animals, though they may be seen in small groups, especially during mating or on shared ice floes.
