About the Emperor Tamarin

The emperor tamarin (Saguinus imperator) is a small primate species known for its distinctive appearance, particularly its long, white moustache that gives it a regal, emperor-like look. It is native to the Amazon Basin and is closely related to other species of tamarins.

The fur on its body is primarily greyish or brown with orange or yellow highlights on its chest and limbs.

They have small, claw-like nails (called tegulae) instead of flat nails, which helps them climb and grasp trees easily.

These tamarins live in social groups of 4 to 15 individuals, typically consisting of adults and their offspring.

They are highly cooperative breeders, meaning usually only one female in the group breeds, while others (both males and females) help care for the young. The groups are close-knit and communicate using vocalisations, body language, and even scent marking.

Although they are relatively common within their natural range, the exact population numbers are difficult to estimate due to their remote habitat and small size.

The emperor tamarin is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. While they are not immediately endangered, their populations are at risk due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation of their forest environments in the Amazon.

The Amazon rainforest, home to emperor tamarins, is highly sensitive to climate change. Rising temperatures and altered precipitation patterns can increase the frequency of droughts and wildfires, leading to widespread deforestation.
