Puntarenas

Geography

Puntarenas is a city and province on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The city, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Pacific," is a major port town and a popular destination for tourists and locals. The province is one of the largest in Costa Rica.

Significance

Puntarenas has a long history as a port city. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the main port for coffee exports, linking Costa Rica to international markets. Today, while much of the commercial shipping has moved to other ports, Puntarenas remains a crucial entry point for cruise ships and ferries.

Attractions

Paseo de los Turistas is a lively beachfront promenade in the heart of Puntarenas. It has restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and food stalls selling local treats like "Churchill" (a popular shaved ice dessert). The Paseo de los Turistas is also a great place to stroll, enjoy the ocean views, and watch the sunset.
