Arctic expedition cruising is expensive, but the headline fare rarely tells the whole story.

Two apparently similar voyages can differ by thousands of pounds once flights, hotels, transfers, charter flights, gratuities, expedition clothing and optional activities are taken into account. Equally, a heavily discounted voyage isn't necessarily the best value if it takes you somewhere you are less interested in visiting, spends less time exploring or requires significant additional travel costs.

The good news is that Arctic expedition pricing is far more variable than many travellers realise. Ships have cabins to fill, operators release promotions at different stages of the booking cycle, solo supplements can disappear, flights can be included or credited, and some departure dates are considerably better value than others.

How to use the Arctic Expedition Value Calculator

Start by choosing your currency, then enter the total package price of the first expedition on the left. This works particularly well for a cruise where flights, hotels, transfers or other extras are already included in the advertised fare.

On the right, enter the headline cruise fare of the alternative voyage, then add the other costs you would need to pay separately, such as international flights, hotels, transfers, charter flights, gratuities, expedition clothing and optional activities. You can use “Add another cost” for anything else specific to your trip, including single supplements, additional baggage, visas or pre-cruise accommodation.

The important thing is to compare like with like. A cruise advertised at £6,000 may initially appear much better value than an £8,500 package, but once flights, hotels, transfers and a mandatory charter flight are added, the difference can become surprisingly small.

Travelling Solo

Travelling solo can make an Arctic expedition considerably more expensive because many cabins are priced on the basis of two people sharing, especially in lead-in marketing.

A single supplement is the additional amount charged when one person occupies a cabin designed for two, and it can add 25%, 50% or sometimes considerably more to the advertised per-person fare.

Many see single supplements as punitive costs for those who travel alone, but for operators, they need to meet their costs by maximising occupancy and yield for cabins, so the challenge is to find the compromises.

The good news is that expedition operators regularly reduce or remove these supplements on selected departures. Look for no single supplement, zero solo supplement and dedicated solo traveller offers, particularly when operators are looking to fill remaining cabins. The even better news is that expedition ships increasingly have purpose-designed or re-designated single cabins, which can offer another way to avoid paying a substantial premium for travelling alone.

Always compare the final solo fare rather than the advertised per-person price. A more expensive cruise with no single supplement can ultimately cost less than a heavily discounted voyage with a large solo surcharge.
