About Ruddy-headed Geese

The ruddy-headed goose (Chloephaga rubidiceps) is a species of sheldgoose native to South America. Known for its striking appearance and limited range, this bird is fascinating and vulnerable to environmental pressures.

Typically found in pairs or small flocks. During the breeding season, they are territorial and defend nesting areas.

Breeding occurs during the southern spring and summer (October–January). Nests are typically well-hidden among grasses or shrubs to protect them from predators. Goslings are precocial (can walk and feed themselves shortly after hatching), but parents guard and guide them until they are independent.

Their head and neck are reddish-brown, giving the species its name. The body is light grey with fine black barring on the flanks, and the wings are white with contrasting black flight feathers.

Males and females look very similar, with females being slightly smaller.

Stable in the Falkland Islands, but populations on the mainland are declining.

Climate change poses significant challenges to the ruddy-headed goose, primarily through its impacts on habitats, food availability, and migration patterns.

Changes in water availability, particularly in arid Andean regions, could impact their habitats in the future.
