About Kelp Geese

The kelp goose (Chloephaga hybrida) is a species of waterfowl found in southern South America, particularly in coastal areas around Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, and southern Argentina and Chile. It belongs to the family Anatidae and is part of the Shelduck subfamily. These birds are often associated with coastal habitats with abundant kelp and other seaweed, hence their name.

Kelp geese are generally monogamous and form long-lasting pairs. They are relatively sedentary and territorial during the breeding season.

Males are predominantly white with blackish legs and bills.

Females have brownish-black plumage with white barring and a more camouflaged appearance.

Though exact population numbers are not frequently reported, kelp geese are locally abundant in suitable habitats within their range.

The kelp goose is not considered threatened and is categorised as Least Concern by the IUCN. Its population appears stable, though its restricted coastal range means it could be vulnerable to habitat disturbances.

Coastal areas, especially the rocky shores where kelp geese live, are at risk of submersion due to rising sea levels. This could reduce their nesting and feeding habitats.
