About Crested Ducks

The crested duck (Lophonetta specularioides) is a fascinating waterfowl native to South America. It is notable for its unique appearance and adaptability to various habitats, including coastal and high-altitude regions.

The species gets its name from a small tuft of feathers on the back of its head, though the crest is only sometimes very prominent.

Most populations are sedentary, though some may move short distances in response to changing water levels or food availability.

The crested duck is one of the few equally at home in the Andes and coastal environments, showcasing remarkable ecological flexibility.

Crested ducks feed on aquatic vegetation, invertebrates, small fish, and algae. They are dabblers, often seen tipping forward in the water to feed.

The crested duck is considered relatively common within its range.

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide range and stable populations.

Habitat loss, pollution, and climate change could pose future challenges.

Changes in water availability, particularly in arid Andean regions, could impact their habitats in the future.
