About Blue-winged Teals

The Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors) is a small species of dabbling duck, easily recognised by its distinctive features. The male Blue-winged Teal has a striking appearance: a dark, glossy greenish head, a white crescent-shaped patch on the face and a light brown body. The most distinctive feature is the vibrant blue patch on the wings, which is visible when the bird is in flight. The females are more cryptic in appearance, generally mottled brown with the same blue wing patches. They also have a subtle facial pattern, though not as distinct as the males.

Relatively small compared to other ducks, the Blue-winged Teal measures about 33–41 cm (13–16 inches ) in length and has a wingspan of around 56–61 cm (22–24 inches).

As dabbling ducks, Blue-winged Teals feed on the surface of the water or tip their bodies to feed on aquatic plants, seeds, and insects. They also consume small fish and invertebrates. Blue-winged Teals nest on the ground, often in dense vegetation near water. The female builds a nest and lays a clutch of eggs, usually between 6 and 12.

The Blue-winged Teal is considered a fairly common species globally. It is abundant during migration and winter, especially in coastal and freshwater habitats.

Blue-winged Teals are not currently endangered; their populations are stable. They are safeguarded under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which regulates hunting and protects their habitats across North America. The main threat to these birds is habitat loss due to wetland conversion, pollution, and climate change.

Climate change impacts Blue-winged Teals’ wetland habitat through droughts, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels. Additionally, Timing mismatches between migration and food availability, along with stronger storms during migration, increase challenges to their survival.
