Arran

Geography

Arran lies off the southwest coast of Scotland, near Glasgow, and is easily accessible by ferry from the mainland port of Ardrossan.

Significance

Arran has a rich archaeological heritage, with evidence of human settlement from the Neolithic period onward. The island has an abundance of ancient sites, including stone circles and burial cairns.

Attractions

The highest peak on Arran, Goat Fell reaches 874 meters and offers challenging hikes with rewarding panoramic views of the island and surrounding waters.

A National Trust property with an impressive stately home, formal gardens, and woodlands, Brodick Castle is a major historical attraction. The castle dates back to the 13th century, though much of it was later rebuilt, and it houses exhibits on local history.

Machrie Moor Standing Stones ancient archaeological site on the west of the island is home to mysterious stone circles and burial cairns dating back thousands of years, giving visitors a sense of Scotland’s prehistoric past.

Activities

With trails ranging from scenic coastal walks to the rugged paths of Goat Fell, Arran is a haven for walkers. Other popular trails include the Glenashdale Falls and King’s Cave walks.

Arran is home to a variety of wildlife, including red deer, seals, golden eagles, and otters. The island’s diverse ecosystems make it a prime spot for birdwatching and nature photography.
