Golfito

Geography

Golfito is a small, picturesque port town on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, in the Puntarenas province. It is known for its lush natural surroundings, historical significance, and role as a gateway to the Osa Peninsula, one of the country's most biodiverse regions.

Significance

Golfito was once a thriving hub for the banana industry in Costa Rica. The United Fruit Company established a major base there in the early 20th century, contributing to the town's growth. However, when the company ceased operations in the 1980s, Golfito's economy shifted.

Attractions

Golfito is a gateway to the Osa Peninsula, home to Corcovado National Park, which is often considered one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Visitors can explore pristine rainforests and remote beaches and observe wildlife such as scarlet macaws, tapirs, and even pumas.

Activities

The calm waters of the Golfo Dulce are perfect for kayaking and boating. These activities allow visitors to explore the coastline and mangroves and spot wildlife. The rainforests around Golfito offer excellent opportunities for hiking and guided wildlife tours. Visitors can learn about the local ecosystem and see animals in their natural habitat.
