Stand up paddle boarding (SUP)

Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) in polar regions can be an exhilarating and unique experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and considerations due to the extreme environmental conditions.

It's essential to have experienced guides or instructors who are familiar with the polar environment and know how to safely conduct SUP activities in these conditions. Usually, you’ll find a team of several onboard your chosen expedition ship, so you’re in very good hands. They can provide guidance on safety protocols and help you navigate the unique challenges of polar paddling.

Weather and ice conditions in polar regions can change rapidly, so it's crucial to stay informed and be prepared for any changes – always stay close to the group and your experts. They will check weather forecasts and ice reports before heading out on the water, so they are fully prepared to adjust your plans accordingly.

Wearing good layers of clothing for this is a must, as these will protect you from the shock of cold-water immersion, should you lose your balance. You will often find expedition ships carry specific dry suits for this.

Polar regions are home to a variety of wildlife, including polar bears, seals, and whales. Be aware of your surroundings and follow any guidelines provided by your guides to avoid disturbing or endangering wildlife.
