Primates

Primates are an order of mammals that include a diverse group of animals, ranging from tiny lemurs to giant apes. Known for their intelligence, complex social behaviours, and grasping hands, primates are found in various habitats, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America.

One of primates' defining features is their ability to grasp objects, thanks to opposable thumbs (and sometimes toes). This adaptation allows for tool use, climbing, and complex manipulation of objects.

Primates have forward-facing eyes, which provide them with depth perception and a high degree of binocular vision. This trait is especially important for species that live in trees, as it helps them judge distances when jumping or moving from branch to branch.

Compared to other mammals, primates have relatively larger brains in relation to their body size, particularly the cerebral cortex, which is involved in higher cognitive functions like problem-solving, memory, and social behaviour.

Most primates live in complex social groups with strong social bonds. These groups vary from small family units to large troops, and social hierarchies often exist, influencing mating, grooming, and feeding behaviours.

Primates tend to have longer childhoods compared to other animals. They often give birth to a single offspring at a time and provide extensive parental care, teaching their young essential survival and social skills.

Primates are divided into two main suborders: Strepsirrhines and Haplorhines.
