About Moose

The moose (Alces alces), known as elk in Europe, is the largest and heaviest species of the deer family Cervidae. Found primarily in the northern hemisphere, moose are known for their massive size, distinctive broad antlers, and long legs adapted for navigating through dense forests and deep snow.

Moose typically have dark brown or blackish fur, with a lighter-colored "beard" or dewlap, known as a bell, hanging from their throats.

Moose are excellent swimmers and will often wade into lakes and rivers to feed on underwater plants. Their large nostrils can close while submerged, allowing them to graze on vegetation beneath the water's surface.

Unlike many other deer species, moose are mostly solitary animals, except during the mating season. They are not typically found in herds but may congregate around abundant food sources.

They are common in the northern parts of their range but can be harder to spot due to their solitary nature and preference for dense forest habitats.

While not generally at risk globally, local populations can be affected by habitat fragmentation, vehicle collisions, and hunting.

Climate change affects the phenology of plant species they feed on and increases the prevalence of parasites and diseases such as tick infestations.
