About the Pink River Dolphin

Pink River Dolphins (Inia geoffrensis), boto or Amazon river dolphins, are freshwater dolphins native to South America's Amazon and Orinoco river basins. They are among the most iconic creatures of the Amazon rainforest, particularly for wildlife and cetacean enthusiasts and photographers hoping to capture a playful interaction or breach.

Their pink colour varies and becomes more vibrant with age, diet, and sunlight exposure. Some individuals may appear greyish or white. Adult males are larger than females, growing up to 8 feet (2.5 meters) long and weighing up to 400 pounds (180 kg).

Pink River Dolphins have flexible necks, paddle-like flippers, and a long, narrow snout, making them well-suited for navigating flooded forests and shallow waters.

Found in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, spanning countries like Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Preferred Environment: They inhabit slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded forests, particularly during the wet season when the forest floods.

High Water Season (December to May): Rivers overflow, flooding forests and creating more areas for dolphins to explore. It is easier to spot dolphins in smaller waterways and near trees.

Low Water Season (June to November): Water levels recede, concentrating dolphins in deeper river channels and lakes. It is ideal for boat tours and sightings in open water.

Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times to spot them.

Opt for eco-friendly tours with ExplorEarth partners that promote dolphin conservation and avoid tours that encourage feeding or touching the dolphins. Look for certified guides who follow conservation regulations.
