About the Humpback Whale

Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are renowned for their spectacular breaching and complex songs. They are identified by their long pectoral fins, which can reach up to 5 metres (16 feet), and their knobbly heads, marked with golf ball-sized bumps called tubercles—each of these tubercles contains one hair follicle. Humpback Whales are highly migratory, travelling thousands of kilometres between nutrient-rich polar feeding grounds in summer and warmer tropical or subtropical waters for breeding and calving in winter. Their haunting songs, produced by males, can last up to 20 minutes and travel vast distances underwater. Humpbacks can sometimes be seen breaching or tail-slapping, providing unforgettable encounters for whale watchers.

They are fairly common and their populations have been recovering since the end of commercial whaling.

Protected internationally, they continue to face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes, and noise pollution.

Changes in ocean temperatures and prey distributions can alter their migratory patterns and affect their breeding or feeding behaviours.
