About the Dusky Dolphin

Dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) are energetic and social marine mammals known for their acrobatic displays and distinctive colour patterns, found primarily in the coastal waters of the Southern Hemisphere.

These dolphins face threats from bycatch in fisheries, habitat degradation, noise pollution, and, to a lesser extent, direct hunting. Climate change further exacerbates these challenges by altering ocean temperatures and prey availability. Conservation efforts, including establishing marine protected areas, sustainable fishing practices, pollution control, and public awareness, are essential to safeguard the future of dusky dolphins.

Dusky dolphins are considered relatively common within their specific range. Still, their populations are localised to coastal waters in the Southern Hemisphere. Their exact global population numbers are hard to determine, they are known to be abundant in specific areas such as New Zealand, Argentina, and parts of southern Africa.

Dusky dolphins often get caught in fishing nets and lines, leading to injury or death. This bycatch is a significant threat in areas with intensive fishing activities. Both small-scale and commercial fisheries contribute to this issue. In some regions, dusky dolphins have been targeted for their meat and as bait for crab fisheries. While not as widespread as before, such practices still pose a threat.

Climate change can alter ocean temperatures and currents, affecting the distribution and abundance of the prey species that dusky dolphins rely on, such as small fish and squid.

As water temperatures change, dusky dolphins may be forced to move to new areas to find suitable conditions, potentially leading to increased competition and stress.
