About the Arctic Fox

The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), also known as the white fox, polar fox, or snow fox, is a small, hardy mammal native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is incredibly well adapted to cold environments, with a thick, warm coat that changes colour with the seasons. In winter, their fur is white, helping them blend into the snowy surroundings, while in summer, it turns brown or grey, providing camouflage in the tundra's rocky and barren landscape.

Arctic foxes have thick fur that provides insulation, and their compact body shape—short legs, ears, and muzzle—reduces heat loss. Their furry soles also provide traction and warmth when walking on snow and ice.

Arctic foxes are solitary and territorial animals. They live in dens, often built into the sides of hills or riverbanks, to protect themselves from predators and extreme weather.

The global population of Arctic foxes is considered stable in many areas. They are not globally endangered and are classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

However, in Scandinavia and Finland, the Arctic fox populations are endangered due to food scarcity and competition with the red fox, which has been migrating north due to climate change.

Arctic foxes are considered endangered in Scandinavia. Norway, Sweden, and Finland are implementing conservation measures to protect and stabilise their populations.

While the species is not globally endangered, Arctic fox populations in some areas are under pressure due to climate change, which affects their habitat and food sources.
