About the Mountain Goat

Mountain Goats (Oreamnos americanus), also known as Rocky Mountain Goats, are cloven-footed mammals from the Bovidae family. Despite what their name suggests, they are not actually goats. They belong to a group called ‘goat-antelopes’ and have more in common with an antelope than a domestic goat.

The Mountain Goat is the largest mammal found in its high-altitude habitat. It is often found at altitudes of over 4,000 metres (13,000 feet). Mountain Goats are excellent climbers and well-adapted to the mountain habitat. They can climb steep slopes of over 60 degrees and jump nearly 3.5 metres (12 feet) in a single bound.

Mountain Goats have short, black, slightly curved horns and cloven hooves. Their white fur keeps them warm in cold temperatures and protects them from predators by helping them blend into snowy landscapes. Their main predators are cougars, wolves and brown bears.

Mountain Goats are relatively common. Their population is considered stable.

Mountain Goats are protected from various threats because of the inaccessibility of the areas they live in. However, they are still sensitive to human disturbance, in particular to the increasing use of helicopters for industrial and recreational purposes in their habitat.

Changes in temperatures affect their high-altitude habitat. Vegetation zones are shifting upwards, forcing Mountain Goats to move higher in search of food.
