Expedition overview & highlights

  • Sail the Chilean Fjords, keeping watch for the many seabirds and marine wildlife.
  • Observe wildlife including whales and penguins.
  • Hone your ice and wildlife photography skills.

Welcome to Aurora Expeditions’ Wild Antarctica featuring the Weddell Sea Fly/Sail expedition. Renowned for its colossal icebergs, year-round sea ice, fascinating fossils, and its key role in Shackleton’s legendary Endurance expedition, the Weddell Sea offers unparalleled opportunities for discovery. This is a true Antarctic adventure, where we’ll explore not only the western Antarctic Peninsula but also attempt to journey east toward the remote, icy boundary of the Weddell Sea, often surrounded by impenetrable pack ice and home to spectacular tabular icebergs.

Navigate waters brimming with wildlife, from playful penguins to hunting orcas. The Antarctic Sound, the gateway to the Weddell Sea, is famous for its striking ice formations.

We’ll push forward into the frozen expanse of the Weddell Sea, hoping to witness its towering tabular icebergs and endless sea ice—an area deeply woven into the history of Shackleton’s extraordinary Endurance expedition.

Onboard palaeontologists will share their expertise as you learn about the region's volcanic islands, rich in fossils and offering a fascinating glimpse into Antarctica’s ancient geological past.
