Make your own way to Aberdeen pier where your expedition team will welcome you aboard the Ocean Albatross this afternoon. After a briefing session, set sail towards the North Sea.

Known for its rugged beauty, the Fair Isle features diverse landscapes with fields, moors, seaside cliffs, sea stacks, arches, and caves. Wildlife highlights include orcas and seabird colonies on the coastal cliffs. Atlantic puffins, with their colorful plumage and amusing expressions, are the star attraction in spring and summer. Other seabirds, such as fulmars, kittiwakes, and guillemots, can also be spotted.

Keep watch for whales and seabirds as you cruise north to Jan Mayen.

280 miles from Greenland, 340 miles from Iceland and north of the Arctic Circle you will find the isolated volcanic island of Jan Mayen hidden deep in the North Atlantic and crowned by the snow-capped summit of Mt. Beerenberg. From the slopes of the imposing volcano, broken glaciers grasp out into the frigid sea. Usually covered in a blanket of fog, the small mountainous island was declared a nature reserve in 2010. Just 18 people inhabit the island all of who work for the Norwegian military or Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Cross the Barents Sea as you make your way north to Spitsbergen, watching out for marine wildlife and getting to know your fellow adventurers and expedition team. The experience team on-board will provide the best possible experiences based on the weather and ice conditions. Because you are so far north you will experience nearly 24 hours of daylight and the days can be as busy as you wish. You will generally make landings or take Zodiac excursions a few times a day, cruising along spectacular ice cliffs, following whales that are feeding near the surface, making landings for hikes.

Your Expedition Team will take advantage of local ice and weather conditions to explore south west Spitsbergen. Discover spectacular fjords, jagged snowy mountain peaks and immense tidewater glaciers that calve icebergs into turquoise waters. Fields of flowering tundra are home to grazing reindeer and playful Arctic fox, whilst bountiful seas entice walrus and a wide variety of whales. The whole area is alive with migratory birds, including numerous rare species, taking advantage of summer’s fecundity in 24-hour daylight.

Your expedition comes to an end as you disembark in Longyearbyen this morning.

About the Ship

Robert van Kempen

Robert van Kempen

Plancius In The Polar Circle

m/v Plancius was built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and was named Hr. Ms. Tydeman. The ship sailed for the Dutch Navy until June 2004 when it was purchased by Oceanwide Expeditions. Plancius is a Dutch flagged completely rebuilt and converted passenger vessel, complying with the latest SOLAS- regulations, classed by Lloyd’s Register in London. The name Plancius is a tribute to the predecessor of Oceanwide Expeditions (Plancius Foundation, 1981-1996), the first cruise operator on a yearly base in Spitsbergen, offering voyages with a small cruise vessel named Plancius.
