8-Night Svalbard in Depth on the Seaventure

Svalbard and its surrounding waters are home to an estimated 3,000 polar bears—outnumbering the human population. Guided by our expert expedition team, you’ll journey into their realm to observe these magnificent predators in their natural Arctic habitat.

Weather and ice permitting, the voyage pushes beyond 80°N into the edge of the polar ice. Here, you’ll explore one of the northernmost seas on Earth—the golden zone of Arctic wildlife, where life thrives amid the frozen frontier.

Whether exploring on land or gliding through icy waters on a Zodiac, encounters with Arctic wildlife await at every turn. Seabirds wheel around steep cliffs, seals rest upon drifting ice floes, walruses gather along the shore, and Arctic foxes and reindeer roam the rocky tundra.

Step ashore in Ny-Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost settlements and a hub for international Arctic research. Visit the Yellow River Station—China’s scientific outpost in the Arctic—and witness the spirit of global collaboration in this remote frontier.

Deepen your understanding of the Arctic through engaging talks led by specialists on exploration history, flora and fauna, geology, sea ice, and more—bringing the polar world vividly to life.

Map & Cruise Itinerary

Upon arrival in Oslo, the capital of Norway, you will be picked up at your hotel and allowed to rest for a while, or start your tour of this Nordic city.

Oslo blends modern architecture with historic sites. Street cafes radiate a vibrant atmosphere, while landmarks like Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Oslo Opera House complement the city's landscape. Art and culture permeate this cosmopolitan atmosphere. Art lovers will find a visual feast at the Munch Museum and the National Gallery. Every step is a captivating urban adventure.

Today, we will take a chartered flight from Oslo, at 59.9 degrees north latitude, to Longyearbyen, at 78 degrees north latitude. Longyearbyen is one of the northernmost inhabited towns in the world. Located on Spitsbergen, the main island of the Svalbard archipelago, it is a key base for Arctic environmental research.

You'll have the opportunity to explore this unique border town before boarding your ship in the afternoon. During the summer months, Longyearbyen truly is a city where the sun never sets. The world-renowned Global Seed Bank is also located here, making it a worthwhile stop.

In the afternoon, the bus will take you to the pier to board the Poseidon and begin your exciting journey on the Svalbard cruise.

The northern reaches of Svalbard are less affected by the Norwegian Current, which flows from the Greenland Sea, and therefore have more ice cover than the southern part. As a result, the northwest of Spitsbergen boasts a wealth of spectacular fjords, bays, and glaciers. This is a true polar expedition, where you'll be completely immersed in a pristine world of glaciers, ice floes, and the midnight sun.
Sail through the Hinlopen Strait, exploring walrus and seabird colonies along the way. Marvel at the countless seabirds circling overhead – this day promises to be a visual feast, filled with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

Depending on weather and sea conditions, as well as the decisions of the Captain and Expedition Leader, we will have the opportunity to visit:

Driving into Alkefjellet , also known as "Raven Mountain," feels like entering a Jurassic World, where you'll encounter the most spectacular birdwatching of your life. This area, comprised of towering basalt cliffs plunging vertically into the fjord, features glaciers carving out bizarre rock formations that create a breathtaking arctic landscape. At this time of year, over 60,000 pairs of thick-billed murres nest here, creating a massive colony and a spectacular display of flight and habitat.

Torellneset is home to Arctic walruses. Herds of walruses often gather on the beaches here, lazing on the shore or swimming in the water. Set against the backdrop of glaciers and the vast Arctic wilderness, it offers an unparalleled natural experience.

Seaventure, a vessel with the highest ice resistance rating, will journey to the northernmost wilderness of Earth: the ice edge of the Svalbard archipelago. This seemingly desolate world of ice and sea is actually a paradise for Arctic life. Humpback whales gracefully paddle the surface, seals lazily bask on ice floes, and herds of walruses playfully play on the shore. Most breathtakingly, however, are the white figures that stroll the ice floes, intently searching for seals. Joining the expedition team in tracking polar bears will add unparalleled excitement and surprise to this polar expedition.

Weather and ice conditions permitting, we will attempt expeditions above the 80th parallel.

The Northwest Coast is a land of deep fjords, vast glaciers, and centuries of human exploration. The glaciers of Krossfjord and Kongsfjord cascade down from rugged peaks, breaking off into shimmering icebergs. A Zodiac cruise might bring you close to the majestic ice walls of Lilliehöök glacier, echoing with the roar of ice calving into the water. The region's wildlife is also abundant: seals rest on the beaches, Arctic foxes scurry among the rocks, and seabirds circle the towering cliffs.

We'll then land in Ny Ålesund, the gateway to the Arctic and an international research town. This Arctic research base attracts researchers from around the world. We'll also stop by the Yellow River Station, a key Chinese research base in the Arctic. Strolling through the vibrantly colored houses and quiet streets will allow you to deeply experience the cultural and scientific history of the Arctic.

Your Svalbard cruise concludes today. This morning, Poseidon will dock in Longyearbyen. We will transfer you to the airport for your return charter flight to Oslo, Norway. Please arrange your itinerary based on your flight arrival time in Oslo.

Information about the charter flights will be announced in March 2026. We strongly recommend that you stay one night in Oslo after your charter flight.
