Svalbard in Depth on the Seaventure

Svalbard, a remote archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, offers a breathtaking blend of rugged landscapes and unique wildlife. Known for its vast glaciers, towering mountains, and expansive fjords, Svalbard is a place where nature reigns supreme.

Here, you can witness the midnight sun in summer and the mesmerizing northern lights in winter, while roaming among polar bears, reindeer, and seabirds that thrive in this extreme environment. With its rich mining history and small, resilient communities, Svalbard provides a rare glimpse into life at the edge of the world, where every season brings new wonders to explore.

Map & Cruise Itinerary

Upon arrival in Oslo, the capital of Norway, you will be picked up at your hotel and allowed to rest for a while, or start your tour of this Nordic city.

Oslo blends modern architecture with historic sites. Street cafes radiate a vibrant atmosphere, while landmarks like Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Oslo Opera House complement the city's landscape. Art and culture permeate this cosmopolitan atmosphere. Art lovers will find a visual feast at the Munch Museum and the National Gallery. Every step is a captivating urban adventure.

Today, we will take a chartered flight from Oslo, at 59.9 degrees north latitude, to Longyearbyen, at 78 degrees north latitude. Longyearbyen is one of the northernmost inhabited towns in the world. Located on Spitsbergen, the main island of the Svalbard archipelago, it is a key base for Arctic environmental research.

You'll have the opportunity to explore this unique border town before boarding your ship in the afternoon. During the summer months, Longyearbyen truly is a city where the sun never sets. The world-renowned Global Seed Bank is also located here, making it a worthwhile stop.

In the afternoon, the bus will take you to the pier to board the Poseidon and begin your exciting journey on the Svalbard cruise.

Ny-Ålesund is the gateway to the North Pole. It served as the starting point for many famous explorers. It attracts researchers from around the world year-round, and several countries have established Arctic research stations here. Our country's Yellow River Station is located here. Don't miss the museum and the famous post office, considered the northernmost in the world!

We will sail north to explore the fascinating area between the ice cap and the ocean. Here, the waters are filled with floating ice and drifting sea ice, a haven for wildlife. During the cruise, we will have excellent opportunities to observe wildlife, especially seals and walruses basking in the sun on the shimmering ice.

The Svalbard Archipelago is known as the Kingdom of Polar Bears, home to over 3,000 polar bears. They rely primarily on the sea ice to hunt seals, making this an ideal feeding ground. Experienced expedition members will be on the lookout for polar bears, and we're likely to see them walking, hunting, or resting at the ice edge. If conditions permit, we'll take a Zodiac tour among the ice floes to admire the magnificent icebergs and observe wildlife up close.

Sail through the Hinlopen Strait, exploring walrus and sea gull colonies along the way. As we cross the Freeman Sound, marvel at the countless seagulls circling overhead, ensuring a visual feast for the eyes and filled with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

Driving into Alkefjellet , also known as "Raven Mountain," feels like entering a Jurassic World, where you'll encounter the most spectacular wave surf of your life. This expanse of towering asphaltic cliffs plunges vertically into the fjord, and the bizarre rock formations carved by glaciers create a natural wonderland of polar nature. At this time of year, over 60,000 pairs of thick-billed murres nest here, forming a massive bird colony and a spectacular display of flight and roosting.

Torellneset is home to Arctic walruses. Herds of walruses often gather on the beaches here, lazing on the shore or swimming in the water. Set against the backdrop of glaciers and the vast Arctic wilderness, it offers an unparalleled natural experience.

In the morning, we'll travel to Svingeldalen , renowned for its glaciers and canyon formations . The rugged terrain and deep ravines carved by meltwater from the glaciers create a captivating natural landscape. This area is home to Arctic foxes and domesticated musk deer, and Arctic birds also roam the valleys. Weather permitting, you can hike to discover unique Arctic flora and wildlife, and take in the breathtaking scenery amidst the surrounding snow-capped mountains.

In the afternoon, we'll visit Cape Lee Dolerittneset , a site rich in history and cultural heritage, having witnessed the arrival of numerous Arctic expeditions. This area is renowned for its distinctive volcanic cliffs, which rise along the coast and reveal the traces of millions of years of volcanic activity. Floating glaciers often form in the surrounding waters, creating a spectacular natural spectacle and an ideal location for admiring the wonders of Arctic geology.

Today we'll travel to the southernmost tip of Spitsbergen National Park and explore the magnificent Hornsund Fjord , considered one of the most beautiful fjords in Svalbard. The fjord is renowned for its steep mountains, stunning glaciers, and abundant vegetation. As you sail through the 18-mile-long fjord, you'll have the opportunity to witness the spectacular sight of glaciers calving underwater.

If conditions permit, we'll land in Gåshamna and Bruggebukta . Gåshamna was a base for Dutch whalers in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the remains of whaling boilers and ships still remain. In summer, the bay is surrounded by majestic mountains and glaciers, and mosses and Arctic plants bring life to this desolate landscape.

Brühlbrücke Tower, surrounded by numerous glaciers, forms one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the Svalbard Archipelago. Here, the glaciers meet the water, attracting a rich wildlife. A hike to the nearby hills offers panoramic views of the glaciers and fjords, and a glimpse into the unique landscape and ecology of the polar regions.

Svalbard is a sacred temple of nature, an eternal paradise on earth. Our cruise around Svalbard concludes today, with Poseidon docking in Longyearbyen. We will transfer you to the airport for your return charter flight to Copenhagen on July 29th.
