The Beagle Channel

Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego Province in Argentina and serves as a gateway for exploring the Beagle Channel and the surrounding wilderness. A place frequented by Sea Lions, Penguins and rich wildlife.

Geography

Punta Arenas is perched on the Brunswick Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Magellan, in the southernmost reaches of the Chilean Patagonian region. Surrounded by wild landscapes, it is the largest city below the 46th parallel south.

Attractions

The Nao Victoria Museum, where a full-size replica of Ferdinand Magellan's ship is on display; the solemn yet beautiful Municipal Cemetery; and the Museo Regional de Magallanes, which details the region's history and heritage. The city's main square, Plaza Muñoz Gamero, has a statue of Magellan, a native Fuegian, which is believed to bring good luck to those who kiss its toe.

Embarking on boat tours to see the nearby colonies of Magellanic penguins; exploring the rugged landscapes of Tierra del Fuego on day trips; enjoying the regional cuisine, including king crab and Patagonian lamb. Adventure-seekers can venture into the Torres del Paine National Park or take a cruise through the fjords to the glaciers.

Strolling along the Costanera promenade for views of the Strait of Magellan; shopping for Patagonian woollens and crafts in the local markets, and visiting the Mirador Cerro de la Cruz for a picturesque perspective of the city's colourful rooftops set against the backdrop of the strait. Seasonal whale watching and skiing near the city is also available.
