Greenland. Has its inaccessibility begun to thaw?

Small ship operators have traditionally found Greenland a harder sell than the jewel of Arctic cruising, Svalbard. But with a recent blaze of publicity and new airports opening, is Greenland about to finally have its day?

With writhing beaches of fleshy walruses and encounters with polar bears on fractured icefloe, Svalbard has for a while been the star of small ship adventure voyages in the Arctic region. There’s something of a paradox, though, when it comes to Greenland. While Svalbard tourism has thrived, the equally wild and adventurous Greenland has reportedly been a much harder sell. This is primarily due to Greenland’s inaccessibility: its landmass is humungous and has long lacked tourist infrastructure. But this may be about to change.

The island recently opened a new airport in its capital, Nuuk, improving access to its more popular west coast. There’s little doubt the island is benefitting from a Trump ‘bounce’ as the US president’s fanciful ambitions to possess this Danish territory have kept Greenland in the news.
