About the Snow Petrel

Snow petrels (Pagodroma nivea) are small, strikingly beautiful seabirds that are part of the petrel family. They are known for their pristine white plumage, black eyes, and small black beaks, which make them look particularly elegant against the stark Antarctic landscape.

They are small, typically measuring 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) in length, with a wingspan of about 75–95 cm (30–37 inches).

Snow petrels feed mainly on fish, krill, and other tiny marine organisms. They are skilled divers and surface feeders.

Like other petrels, they are excellent fliers and can glide effortlessly over long distances.

Snow petrels lay a single egg in a crevice or under a rock to protect it from predators and harsh weather. Both parents share incubation and feeding duties until the chick fledges.

They often form small groups and are known to be territorial around their nesting sites.

Snow Petrels are common within their range but are mostly seen by those venturing deep into the interior or visiting remote islands.

Relatively safe due to their inaccessible nesting sites, they are nevertheless impacted by climate change and ocean pollution.

Changes in sea ice patterns and temperature can affect the availability of their prey in the Southern Ocean.
