About the Nazca Booby

The Nazca Booby (Sula granti) is a seabird found primarily in the Galápagos Islands. They used to be considered a subspecies of the Masked Booby, but today the Nazca Boody is recognised as a species in its own right. They have white plumage with black tails and black tips on their wings. A thin black ring outlines their eyes. The orange-yellow beak contrasts with the black-and-white of the bird's plumage.

Nazca Boobies feed primarily on fish and squid. They can travel hundreds of kilometres from their nesting sites in search of food. They spot fish beneath the water's surface from the sky. These birds are excellent divers; they plunge into water at high speed to catch their prey.

Nazca Boobies live in colonies that vary in size from several hundred to several thousand birds. One of the largest Nazca Boobies colonies resides on Española Island in the Galápagos. Thousands of pairs breed each year on that island. The courtship rituals of Nazca Boobies include head bobbing, sky pointing and offering small objects such as stones or sticks as part of their display to attract a mate.

The population of the Nazca Booby is stable. These birds are not very widespread, but they are common in the Galápagos islands, especially on Española and Genovesa, where thousands of birds breed every year.

The Nazca Booby is not considered endangered. The Galápagos National Park protects them by enforcing strict rules to preserve their ecosystem. As is the case for many sea birds, some of the potential threats to the Nazca Booby include climate change, pollution, overfishing and habitat disturbance.

Changes in ocean water temperatures can affect food availability for these birds.
