About the Dolphin Gull

The Dolphin Gull (Leucophaeus scoresbii) is also known as the Magellanic Gull. This bird is easily recognisable by its distinctive slate-grey plumage that contrasts sharply with its bright orange beak and legs.

Dolphin Gulls are native to the Falkland Islands and the southern regions of Chile and Argentina. They usually live in rocky coastal areas and breed in small colonies of up to 200 pairs.

Dolphin Gulls are opportunistic feeders. They feed on carrion, offal, bird eggs, nestlings, fish scraps, marine invertebrates, and other coastal food sources.

The Dolphin Gull is a fairly common bird throughout its range. However, due to the remoteness of its habitat, it is rarely seen and can be a real highlight for a birdwatcher.

The IUCN lists Dolphin Gulls as Least Concern. Their population is stable and not subject to any major threats.

Climate change affects Dolphin Gulls’ primary habitat – coastal ecosystems. Severe weather events and temperature changes can disrupt the nesting sites and food availability of these birds.
