About the Arctic Tern

Arctic Terns are famous for their incredible long-distance migrations, travelling from their Arctic breeding grounds to the Antarctic and back again each year, a distance of over 25,000 miles.

Arctic Terns are abundant during their breeding season in suitable Arctic habitats.

While not currently endangered, they are vulnerable to climate change and human disturbances during breeding.

As polar regions warm, the ice-free season extends, potentially altering their prey availability in both Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Where to see Arctic Terns

They breed in circumpolar regions including the Arctic tundra and migrate to the Antarctic coast for the winter.

Interesting facts about Arctic Terns

Arctic Terns see two summers each year during their migration, enjoying more daylight than any other creature on the planet.
