About the Yellow Warbler

The Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia) is a small songbird easily recognisable by its bright yellow plumage. Male Yellow Warblers have some reddish-brown streaks on the underparts, while females are not as bright as males and are yellow overall. These birds measure only about 12 cm in length (4.7 in). They have big black eyes, rounded heads and medium-length tails.

Yellow Warblers live in diverse habitats, including mangroves, wetlands, forest edges, and suburban gardens. Their diet mainly consists of caterpillars, flies and other insects.

Yellow Warblers are very common across their range. They are one of the most recognisable warbler species.

Although the population of the American Yellow Warbler is decreasing, there are approximately 97 million mature birds and the IUCN lists them as Least Concern.

Rising temperatures, droughts, and flooding caused by Climate Change may affect the Yellow Warbler's habitats, such as wetlands and mangroves.
