Landbird Species

Landbirds are a diverse group of avian species that live and find food on land. They are also called ‘terrestrial birds’. Landbirds forage and breed in various habitats – forests, grasslands, deserts, and urban areas. Landbirds’ diet varies depending on species, habitats and seasons. Many of the landbird species migrate. They can travel vast distances between their breeding and wintering grounds.

Expedition cruises provide diverse birdwatching opportunities. Passengers can spot diverse and rare landbirds in their natural habitat during shore excursions and when the ship is sailing near land. Some of the best destinations to engage in birdwatching are the Arctic, Galápagos islands and the Amazon region.

Landbirds are essential to the ecosystems they live in. They are important for keeping nature in balance: they help with pest control and seed dispersal. Today deforestation and urban expansion are some of the main threats to landbirds. Both scientists and bird lovers monitor landbird populations. Several citizen science projects help researchers collect data about landbirds.
