About the Galapagos Hawk

The Galapagos Hawk (Buteo galapagoensis) is a bird of prey endemic to the Galapagos Islands and one of the symbols of the islands. Although closely related to North America’s red-backed and white-tailed hawks, the Galapagos Hawk evolved in isolation from other species and developed unique behaviour.

The Galapagos Hawk is about 55 cm (22 inches) long and has a wingspan of 110 to 120 cm (43 – 47 inches). Adult and juvenile Galapagos Hawks look different: adults have dark brown plumage, whereas juveniles are much paler. Juveniles’ cream plumage helps them camouflage and hides them from potential predators until they reach maturity.

Their sharp eyesight and strong talons help them hunt insects, lizards and small birds. As predators, Galapagos Hawks play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. They regulate the populations of the animals they prey on and ‘clean up’ the environment by scavenging on dead animals.

They are one of the world’s rarest birds of prey. Their population is stable. However, due to the small size of their population, IUCN classifies Galápagos Hawks as Vulnerable.

Ecuadorian law protects Galapagos Hawks. Human activity affecting their habitat is the main threat to these birds.

Climate change threatens the fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands. It is affecting the availability of food sources and increasing the intensity of El Niño events, which impacts the wildlife of the Galapagos.
