Norway destination overview

Norway, a former European Capital of Culture, is a fascinating land. To truly appreciate everything it has to offer, you must visit during the winter and summer months. The contrast is significant, with the landscape and activity options changing dramatically between the two.

I’ve visited Norway numerous times and travelled into the Arctic Circle to ports such as Tromso and Alta, and I’m never disappointed. For me, the winter months are the most exciting because I enjoy the outdoor activities that are best and, in some cases, only able to be experienced at this time of year. These include husky sledging through the snow, chasing the Aurora Borealis on a crisp winter night and reindeer sledging across frozen rivers and lakes with the Sami people.

The Sami are indigenous people in northern Norway, Finland, Sweden, and the Kola peninsula. They have inhabited the Arctic regions for over 10,000 years and traditionally were semi-nomadic, engaging primarily in reindeer herding, fishing, and hunting. To this day, these activities remain a key aspect of the Sami culture.

Norway has a wide variety of individual destinations. On one cruise, you can experience the hustle and bustle of big cities like Oslo and then, the following day, find yourself off the beaten track in small towns that are not only best seen from the sea but also sometimes inaccessible via land.

Norway is a destination that offers intrepid travellers a bit of everything: science, nature, wildlife, unforgettable photography opportunities, and informative lectures onboard. It ticks all the right boxes for expedition cruising because your sole purpose while there is to explore.
