Jura

Geography

Jura is a small island in Scotland's Inner Hebrides. It is located off the west coast of mainland Scotland and northeast of Islay. The island is dominated by three distinctive quartzite mountains, the Paps of Jura.

Significance

Jura is known for its wild beauty and tranquil isolation. One of Scotland's least densely populated islands, Jura is home to fewer than 200 residents, outnumbered by a population of over 5,000 red deer. Jura also holds a literary significance. George Orwell completed his famous novel "1984" at Barnhill, Jura.

Attractions

Whisky lovers should visit the Jura Distillery in Craighouse, where the island's single malt is crafted.

Activities

Jura offers an intimate glimpse into Scotland's wild heart. Visitors can engage in hiking and wildlife watching. Nature enthusiasts can revel in birdwatching, with golden eagles, hen harriers, and seabirds frequenting its skies. It is also a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture and to sample the local whisky.
