Admiralty Island

Geography

Located in the Alexander Archipelago in Southeast Alaska, Admiralty Island is surrounded by the Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound, and Stephens Passage.

Significance

Known as "Kootznoowoo" (Fortress of the Bears) to the Tlingit, Admiralty Island is notable for having one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in North America. It's also important for its cultural significance to indigenous peoples and for the Admiralty Island National Monument, which encompasses most of the island.

Attractions

The Pack Creek Brown Bear Viewing Area, where visitors can safely observe bears in their natural habitat. The island is also known for its old-growth temperate rainforests and the Canoe Pass and Windfall Harbour.

Activities

Bear watching, fishing, kayaking, and exploring the vast wilderness. The island's extensive trail system and protected waters offer excellent opportunities for outdoor adventures.
