São Roque do Pico

Geography

São Roque do Pico is situated on the northern coast of Pico Island, beneath the towering Pico Mountain, Portugal's highest peak. The town is known for its whaling history and wine production.

Significance

The town’s landscape is marked by vineyards protected by stone walls which are a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting the unique wine culture of Pico.

Attractions

The Whalers Museum, the São Roque church, and the vineyards of Criação Velha.

Activities

Climbing Pico Mountain, whale watching, and exploring the UNESCO-listed vineyards to taste local wine.
