King William Island

A visit to King William Island offers an unforgettable mix of history, culture, and Arctic adventure—perfect for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Most expedition cruises land on the island in Zodiacs, allowing passengers to explore the key historical sites.

Visit to Gjoa Haven: This small Inuit community is the main settlement on the island. It’s named after Gjøa, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's ship, who wintered here while completing the first successful transit of the Northwest Passage (1903-1906). Visitors can engage with local Inuit culture, visit museums, and learn about traditional Arctic survival techniques.

Franklin Expedition Sites: Depending on ice conditions and permits, some cruises visit sites associated with Franklin’s men, such as Victory Point and Starvation Cove, where evidence of their final struggles has been found.

Wildlife Viewing: Though stark and icy, the region is home to Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, Arctic foxes, musk oxen, and various seabirds. Seals and even narwhals might be spotted offshore.
Scenic Arctic Landscapes: King William Island features a barren tundra landscape with rugged coastlines, permafrost terrain, and low-lying vegetation.

Best Time to Visit: The Arctic cruise season is typically from July to September, when ice conditions are most navigable and wildlife is active.
August is often ideal for historical exploration, as it provides the best chance for landings and visits to archaeological sites.
