Gjoa Haven

Geography

Located on King William Island in the Nunavut territory, Gjoa Haven is a welcoming hamlet deeply rooted in Inuit culture and history, surrounded by arctic tundra and sea waters filled with a diversity of marine life.

Significance

The community is named after Roald Amundsen's ship, Gjøa, which overwintered here during his successful navigation of the Northwest Passage, making it a significant site for polar exploration history.

Attractions

The Northwest Passage Territorial Trail, the Nattilik Heritage Centre, and the nearby wrecks of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror are of great interest.

Activities

Cultural workshops, wildlife viewing, and historical site visits provide a deep dive into the area's exploration history and contemporary Inuit life.
