Fort Ross

Geography

Fort Ross is a former Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post located on Somerset Island's southern coast. Although now abandoned, the site offers a glimpse into the Arctic's trading history and the challenges of life in extreme conditions.

Significance

Established in 1937, Fort Ross was one of the last trading posts to be established in the Canadian Arctic, serving as a crucial supply point for Inuit communities and explorers before its closure in 1948.

Attractions

The historical buildings, including the trading post and the storage facilities, have been well preserved, offering a window into the past. The surrounding landscape is also striking, with views of the Bellot Strait.

Activities

Visiting Fort Ross on an expedition cruise allows for historical exploration, photography, and the chance to see Arctic wildlife in the nearby waters and tundra.
