Banks Island

Geography

The westernmost island of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, the landscape of Banks Island is predominantly a tundra home to the world's largest population of musk oxen. The island's coastline is marked by high cliffs and deep fjords.

Significance

Banks Island is significant for its biodiversity, including the Aulavik National Park, which boasts one of the highest concentrations of musk oxen globally, and some important archaeological sites.

Attractions

The Aulavik National Park offers untouched Arctic landscapes, as well as the Thomsen River, one of the northernmost navigable rivers, which is ideal for canoeing and kayaking.

Activities

Visitors can embark on wildlife viewing expeditions to see musk oxen, arctic foxes, and caribou, or explore the island's flora and fauna through guided hikes and river trips.
