South Orkney Islands

Geography

Situated in the Southern Ocean, northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Orkney Islands are a remote archipelago comprising four main islands and several smaller ones, largely covered in glaciers.

Significance

The islands are a key research area with scientific bases from Argentina and the UK focusing on studies in glaciology and biology. The South Orkneys are significant for their pristine environment and as a monitoring point for climate change effects.
