Baia Tigres

Geography

Baia Tigres, also known as Tiger Bay, is an isolated and uninhabited island off the southwestern coast of Angola. Once connected to the mainland, this arid island is now surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and is characterised by stark desert landscapes juxtaposed with the deep blue of the sea.

Significance

Originally a fishing community, Baia Tigres became isolated from the mainland due to shifting sands and rising sea levels, resulting in a fascinating ghost town. The island is significant for its unique ecosystem and as a poignant example of the impact natural environmental changes can have on human settlements.

Attractions

The remnants of the abandoned fishing village are a haunting yet intriguing site to explore as the infrastructure of its old buildings are slowly being reclaimed by nature. The island’s remote beaches offer pristine stretches of sand and solitude.

Activities

Exploring the ghost town, wildlife spotting, particularly seabirds and marine life, and fishing. The landscapes are an excellent opportunity for photography enthusiasts.
