Take the Leap?

Many expeditioners consider the Polar Plunge as much as a rite of passage as traversing the Drake Passage, and it is always surprising how many passengers are up for the challenge. There is little doubt that it represents one of the best ways to demonstrate to fellow passengers and friends at home your total immersion in the polar experience.

The polar plunge is where passengers jump into icy polar waters from the ship (while some operators may offer a beach-led dip instead, but it’s not quite the same).

It's seen as a thrilling and, for many, once-in-a-lifetime experience offered in polar regions like Antarctica or the Arctic. While it might seem dangerous, safety measures are in place. Participants usually wear life vests and are briefed on safety procedures. They are then quickly assisted back onto the ship, and medical staff are on standby. It's generally safe for those in good health, but it's essential to consult with the cruise's medical team if you have health concerns.

You’ll also be able to tell everyone you're for the T-shirt, which is always sought as a trophy of the plunge, and provide suitable evidence of its completion. You’ll likely be met back onboard to rapturous applause and a finger or two of brandy to blast warmth back through the body and mind.

One of the ExplorEarth team met a lady on an expedition cruise around the British Isles. She informed them that she had been a founder of the polar plunge when, quite to the amazement of her fellow passengers, she undressed on a beach in South Georgia and ran straight into the sea!
