Where the Runway Ends and the Expedition Begins: The little-known airports that unlock some of the world’s greatest expedition cruises

The ships receive the attention, but some of the world’s greatest expedition cruises depend on tiny airports, private charters and remarkably complex journeys before passengers ever step aboard.

Look closely at some expedition cruise itineraries and an unfamiliar name may appear beside the words “embarkation” or “disembarkation”. Resolute Bay. Kangerlussuaq. Longyearbyen. King George Island. For travellers accustomed to beginning a cruise in Southampton, Sydney or Miami, the obvious question is how a ship, its passengers and all their luggage come together in a place served by a tiny Arctic or Antarctic airport.

The answer is an aviation network that remains largely invisible until the voyage is booked. Some of the world’s most remote expedition cruises depend upon a carefully coordinated chain of scheduled services, private charter flights, included hotel nights, group transfers and weather-dependent connections. The sea voyage may dominate the brochure, but before passengers board a Zodiac or set foot on the ship, many have already completed a small expedition by air.

This is an element of expedition cruising that first-time travellers may not initially understand. A flight shown within an itinerary is not necessarily a normal airline service that can be searched for and booked independently. It may be an aircraft chartered by the expedition operator, carrying almost everyone joining or leaving the ship and operating at a time dictated by the vessel’s position. In other destinations, a scheduled domestic flight performs much the same role. Either way, these airports make possible itineraries that could not realistically begin at a conventional cruise port.

Resolute Bay: an air gateway to the Northwest Passage

Resolute Bay Airport sits on Cornwallis Island in Nunavut, deep within the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The nearby Inuit community of Qausuittuq has only a small population, yet the airport occupies a strategically important position for scientists, local residents, government operations and expedition travellers. Its location near Lancaster Sound, Beechey Island, and the central channels of the Northwest Passage means ships can begin or end a voyage in the High Arctic without spending many additional days sailing from southern Canada.

For some current Quark Expeditions voyages, passengers first gather in Calgary and stay overnight before boarding a charter flight to Resolute. On arrival, the transition from air to sea can be strikingly direct. Travellers may explore the community before transferring to their expedition ship by Zodiac or, depending on the ship’s position and conditions, by helicopter. Other itineraries work in reverse, with passengers disembarking at Resolute and flying south together on a charter flight.

This is the logistical detail hidden by a simple line on the itinerary. The aircraft, passengers, luggage, expedition ship and local transfer operation all need to converge within a narrow window in one of the world’s least predictable operating environments. The runway is not merely the quickest way to reach the cruise. It gives the cruise its particular shape.

Resolute also reveals why travellers should pay close attention to the flight arrangements included with an expedition. The charter may be part of a mandatory transfer package rather than the headline cruise fare. Its departure time may only be confirmed close to travel, and an included hotel night is not simply an added benefit. It creates a buffer that enables the operator to assemble the group and protect the onward operation.

Pond Inlet and Cambridge Bay: airports along the passage

Resolute is not the only small airport connected with expedition cruising in Nunavut. Pond Inlet, known in Inuktitut as Mittimatalik, lies at the northern end of Baffin Island near the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage. Across the Arctic Archipelago, Cambridge Bay, or Iqaluktuuttiaq, occupies a similarly important position on Victoria Island towards its western reaches.

Both are served by Canadian North’s scheduled network, which connects communities across Nunavut and the Northwest Territories with southern gateways including Ottawa and Edmonton. These flights are lifelines first, carrying local residents, freight, mail and essential workers. Their relevance to expedition cruising is only one small part of a much larger purpose.

Pond Inlet is a regular and highly anticipated community call on Arctic voyages rather than a standard turnaround point for every cruise that visits. Its airport nevertheless shows how closely aviation and maritime access overlap in the Canadian Arctic. A community that appears extraordinarily isolated on a conventional map is part of a living regional air network, even while visiting cruise passengers may arrive from their ship by expedition boat.

Cambridge Bay can play a more direct role when conditions demand it, as a possible alternative embarkation or disembarkation point on Northwest Passage itineraries when sea, ice or weather makes the planned turnaround at Kugluktuk impractical. From either community, a charter flight can return passengers to Yellowknife. The airport therefore becomes part of the expedition’s contingency architecture, a reminder that flexibility in the Arctic involves aircraft and ground teams as well as captains and ice charts.

Together, Resolute Bay, Pond Inlet and Cambridge Bay illustrate the geography of the Northwest Passage better than a single route line ever could. Airports at its eastern, central and western reaches allow operators to construct shorter sections of the passage, full transits and one-way journeys between the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. They also make clear that these are not empty waypoints. They are Inuit communities whose airports primarily sustain everyday northern life.

Puerto Williams and King George Island: two remote airports, one Antarctic air bridge

The most remarkable airport pairing in expedition cruising may now be found between Puerto Williams in southern Chile and King George Island in Antarctica.

Puerto Williams stands on Navarino Island beside the Beagle Channel. Its Guardiamarina Zañartu Airport is connected to Punta Arenas by a small regional air service, while the town has also become an important base for Silversea’s Antarctic operation. From the 2026 season, Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise uses private charter flights between Puerto Williams and the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh airfield on King George Island, a journey of around two hours.

Passengers leave a small airport at the southern edge of South America and land at an even more extraordinary airfield in the South Shetland Islands. There is no conventional Antarctic terminal experience waiting for them. Travellers prepare for arrival by putting on expedition clothing, including parkas, waterproof trousers and boots, before leaving the aircraft. From the airstrip, they continue towards the shore and their expedition ship. The cruise begins not after a long ocean crossing, but almost immediately upon reaching Antarctica.

This is one of the clearest examples of aviation changing the character of an expedition. By flying across the Drake Passage, passengers avoid approximately two days at sea in each direction and spend more of their holiday in Antarctica. The trade-off is that an aircraft requires suitable conditions at both airports. Wind, cloud and visibility can delay operations, so travellers may be asked to remain ready to depart when a safe weather window opens.

Silversea has built an unusually complete piece of infrastructure around this vulnerability. The Cormorant at 55 South, described by the company as the world’s southernmost hotel, has been created in Puerto Williams specifically to support its Antarctic guests. Rather than treating the town as a brief transit point, the hotel provides accommodation before and after the charter flight, with views across the Beagle Channel and experiences designed to introduce travellers to the landscape of southern Patagonia.

Its purpose is both operational and experiential. If Antarctic weather delays a flight, guests can wait in dedicated accommodation rather than a small terminal, while Silversea can manage successive arrivals and departures amid changing conditions. The hotel, airport, charter aircraft and expedition ship function as a connected system. This level of vertical integration is rarely seen in expedition cruising and shows how valuable control over the journey has become.

The Puerto Williams route is also distinctive rather than universal. Other Antarctic fly-cruise operators, including AE Expeditions, usually operate charter flights between Punta Arenas and King George Island. The destination airfield is the same, but the South American gateway and surrounding arrangements differ. That distinction matters when comparing cruises that may all be advertised simply as an Antarctic fly-cruise.

Baltra and San Cristóbal: scheduled flights into a protected archipelago

The Galápagos present another model. Flights to the islands are not normally private cruise charters. Travellers use scheduled domestic services from Quito or Guayaquil to one of two principal gateways: Seymour Airport on Baltra Island or San Cristóbal Airport beside Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

Baltra is the busier gateway for expedition cruising. Passengers may move from aircraft to coach, cross the narrow Itabaca Channel by ferry and continue over Santa Cruz Island, or transfer towards a vessel operating nearby. San Cristóbal offers a more immediate connection with the inhabited island and serves cruises beginning or ending in the eastern archipelago. Which airport appears on the booking is therefore determined by the ship’s itinerary, not simply by the traveller’s preference.

These airports are also conservation thresholds. Before flying from mainland Ecuador, passengers pass through biosecurity controls designed to reduce the risk of introducing plants, seeds, animals or other material that could damage the islands’ ecosystems. Luggage is inspected, and visitor documentation and national park requirements form part of the journey. Here, aviation does more than deliver travellers to their ship. It helps regulate entry into one of the planet’s most sensitive protected environments.

Longyearbyen: a familiar airport with an expedition secret

Longyearbyen Airport may feel surprisingly conventional after Resolute or King George Island. It has scheduled connections with mainland Norway, a paved runway and a terminal familiar to the thousands of travellers who visit Svalbard each year. Yet expedition operators also use it in a less visible way.

Quark Expeditions, for example, packages charter flights between Helsinki and Longyearbyen with hotel nights and local transfers on several Svalbard voyages. This allows an entire shipload of passengers to travel together and gives the operator greater control over the connection between aircraft and vessel. A traveller searching ordinary airline schedules may therefore miss the flight intended for their cruise. Other operators use Oslo in Norway as the charter gateway to Svalbard. 

Longyearbyen demonstrates that chartering is not only a solution for airports without scheduled services. It can also simplify a complex turnaround, align arrival times with port operations and reduce the risk of passengers reaching the ship by multiple routes at different times. The airport may be well established, but the flight serving a particular expedition can still be a private part of the cruise programme.

Kangerlussuaq: the gateway whose role is changing

For decades, Kangerlussuaq was one of Greenland's great aviation gateways. Its long runway, inherited from its history as an American air base, could accommodate transatlantic aircraft that many of Greenland’s smaller airports could not. Expedition operators used charter flights from cities including Copenhagen, Reykjavík and Toronto to connect passengers with ships waiting at the head of the long Kangerlussuaq fjord.

Reaching the vessel can involve another transition. The airport and settlement lie inland, while the head of the fjord is shallow, so passengers may travel overland and then embark by smaller tender boat or Zodiac before reaching the ship.

Greenland’s aviation map is now changing following the opening of Nuuk’s expanded international airport. More international traffic can reach the capital directly, and some expedition itineraries have moved their turnaround operations accordingly. Kangerlussuaq has not disappeared from the expedition network. Quark Expeditions still advertises voyages beginning there with charter flights from Reykjavík, and scheduled international and domestic services continue. Its evolving role makes it especially interesting: airports that once defined how an entire destination was accessed can lose, retain or reinvent that importance when a new runway opens elsewhere.

Why the flight arrangements matter when booking

For travellers, the lesson is not that remote expedition flights are inherently difficult. Operators organise them precisely because they make difficult journeys manageable. The important thing is to understand that aviation may be integral to the expedition rather than an optional journey to the port. Another thing to understand is that the ship won't wait for you, so you need to be methodical in your air planning if you are not using the operator's package or charter flights.

A charter flight might be included in the advertised fare (always on an Antarctica fly-cruise) and sold through a compulsory transfer package or priced separately. Luggage allowances may differ from those on the traveller’s international flight. Departure times can remain provisional, and weather may require a group to leave earlier or later than expected, meaning operators often have very solid contingency plans around air. An included hotel night can be an operational safeguard, not disposable free time. At the end of the voyage, booking a tight independent connection can introduce unnecessary risk if the remote flight is delayed.

It is also worth asking where responsibility changes hands. Does the expedition operator arrange the flight from the regional gateway? Are transfers between airport and ship included? What happens if weather prevents the charter from operating? Is an extra hotel night covered, and how much flexibility should be left before the flight home? These questions are as important as asking how many Zodiacs the ship carries or whether kayaking is included.

The journey before the journey

Expedition cruising is often described through what happens after the ship sails: the first iceberg, a polar bear on the horizon, a Zodiac nosing through brash ice or a beach crowded with marine iguanas. Yet many voyages are only possible because of an intricate journey that happens before any of those moments.

At Resolute Bay, an aircraft allows a ship to begin deep inside the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. At Cambridge Bay, a runway provides an alternative when the passage refuses to follow the plan. In Puerto Williams, a dedicated hotel supports a private air bridge to King George Island. At Baltra, an airport controls the transition into a protected ecosystem. Longyearbyen gathers a ship’s passengers from across the world, while Kangerlussuaq shows how a single runway can shape, and then adapt to, the development of an entire expedition destination.

These airports receive little of the romance attached to the ships they serve. Most appear only briefly in an itinerary, perhaps beside a small aircraft symbol or a note about an included transfer. But without them, some of the world’s greatest expedition journeys would be longer, harder or simply impossible. For many travellers, the moment the runway ends is the moment the expedition truly begins.
