Elmina

Geography

Elmina is located on Ghana's southern coast and is famous for its colourful fishing boats and the imposing Elmina Castle, the oldest European-style building in sub-Saharan Africa.

Significance

Like Cape Coast, Elmina is deeply intertwined with the history of the slave trade. Elmina Castle was a major trading post and has become a symbol of African resilience and heritage.

Attractions

Elmina Castle, St. Jago Fort, and the vibrant Elmina fish market. The town's architecture and the bustling harbour are charming.

Activities

Guided tours of the castle to uncover its history, exploring the town's colonial-era buildings, and witnessing daily life at the fish market. Nearby beaches and lagoons offer relaxation and birdwatching opportunities.
